HISTORY

It is impossible to write a complete history of the Greensboro Road church of Christ. There are bits and pieces of information found here and there but there is also much that is lacking. Much of this material is gleaned from past histories and notes made in past gathering among brethren of the church here. The validity of this history is based solely upon those things recorded by brethren in the past and taken to be accurate. Any additions, subtractions or alterations will be gladly accepted to these notes.

Most record the beginning of the church of Christ in Jonesboro with the Dorton Hill church of Christ. However, records show that the church began meeting in Jonesboro a few years before that time in a log house just east of Arkansas State University. This dates to about 1901. There were Christians meeting in and around Jonesboro even before this time. However, there was no central meeting place until the church began meeting in this log house circa 1901.

Our Shepherds

The Greensboro Road church of Christ is overseen by five Shepherds.  The scriptures describe these men and their work as elders, presbyters, bishops, overseers, and pastors.  The church at Greensboro Road is in the watchful and careful hands of Scottie Blanchard, Mike Felts, Terry Joe Kee, Dan Nichols, and Larry Taylor.  These men are responsible for the flock of God which meets here.  The scripture tell us that in matters of expediency we must, "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you."  (Hebrews 13:17)

"The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:  Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;  Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.  And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away."  I Peter 5:1-4

Our Deacons

The deacons of the church are special servants, given specific responsibilities to care for certain areas of our work.  These men work under the oversight of the shepherds of the local church.  They serve as the seven did with the church in Jerusalem (Acts 6:1-7).  The Greensboro Road church of Christ has six such men who work in various areas of our work to help in this capacity.

"Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;  Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.  And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.  Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.  Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.  For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus."
(I Timothy 3:8-13)
